It may be because we link them to our childhood time or may be because they are so cute and attractive. Whatever the reasons, they are easily recognized all over the world within and outside the gaming community. 10. Donkey Kong
This monkey literally went from zero to hero in a very short time. Donkey Kong had a change of heart and now that he’s turned good; he has gone on to great heights of fame. He may be a bit dumb and has a single track mind but no other chimp has won over millions of hearts like this one has! Donkey Kong was the pioneer of the “cut scenes” style story progression which has now become an integral part of any game.
9. Solid Snake

Epic missions which are nothing short of saving the world laid out in a fully blown action movie style are trademarks of Metal Gear Solid. Describing Master Chief with the words “silent yet deadly” is spot-on, but we are not talking about vocal abilities here. Not only has he become popular due to his attitude, but has become a representation of the Microsoft Xbox. Halo has spawned a new generation of games and gamers alike. Although no one has ever seen his face, he still is pretty much well known around in the gaming community. The only reason he is placed so low (eight place in the Top 10 Popular Video Game Heroes list) might be due to the fact that Master Chief is still a relatively new character than others and will in time make his place in the top 3!

Cloud Strife is the most renowned character of the Final Fantasy series. Clouds sports a gigantic blade and his personality is deeply contrasted by giving him blonde spikes. Basically a biologically improved hitman with a sense of justice and duty, he fights for a group called avalanche and is motivated by a grudge. Sephiroth is the main villain of the game who plans on taking over the world. Cloud Strife is not limited to the Final Fantasy series as he has been featured on many other titles. His personality is puzzling as Cloud Strife has been shown to be protective at times and a cool sarcastic person at others.
6. Lara Croft
Representing metro gaming from the play station 1 era, Lara Croft from Tomb Raider is best known as the lady Terminator. Wielding all sorts of weapons, she is rated 6th on the Top 10 Popular Video Game Heroes list. She started an era where women would also save worlds and fight extraterrestrials and also gave new meaning to the phrase I came, I saw, and I conquered. Over the years Lara Croft has had many a facial overhaul but in the end she always manages to please the masses. Tomb Raider has also been turned into a movie franchise which has greatly increased the popularity of Lara Croft, especially because this role was given to Angelina Jolie!

He is rather well known as the blue fighter who has taken on the robotic forces of the notorious doctor Wiley for several decades. In that time he has consistently saved humanity while showcasing the ability to absorb the powers of his fallen force. Sometimes its fire coming out of his hand and sometimes its ice slabs. He is also known as Rock man to his Japanese fans. The most fascinating thing about this franchise is that it has seen over 50 releases including spinoffs. Mega Man was an instant hit back in the day when it was launched because it introduced a new gameplay which merged both platform based games and the run and gun style.
Sonic the hedgehog hasn’t seen enough limelight throughout his speedy career of battling Dr. Robotnik and his hooligans.. Despite this, Sonic remains a beloved gaming icon and Sega’s favorite good luck charm. Sega created a series of games and nominated the chili dog loving Sonic as its mascot. It was created at a time when Mario was in full glory and Sega needed to rival it! Many characters like Knuckles, Tails and Amy rose appeared alongside Sonic in his many adventures since the 90s. The blue blur, as he is called, is set to appear in Sonic Generations 3D which is released 4th November, 2011 in Europe.
It’s a bit hard to think of Mr. Pac-Man as a hero, but being the main protagonist of the most successful franchise in the history of Video Games has given him some privileges! With no firepower and jumping skills at all, Pac-Man ate its way to our hearts since its launch in 1980. Being only a yellow circle with eyes and having a huge appetite, not much is knows about the personality and background of this little critter. It inspired an era of new ideas and breathe life into the arcades scene back then which had labeled as home of shooting games only. Pac-Man is placed 3rd in the Top 10 Popular Video Game Heroes list.

Link starts off as a plain kid and slowly accumulates powers and magic as the game progresses till he has become powerful enough to defeat the antihero.

Rescuing the princess many a times and stomping the daylights out of the evil turtle Bowser in full Spartan style in part of Mario’s charm. Being an Italian created by in American soil sound a little far-fetched, but Mario has gone on to star in more than 180 games and is easily the most recognizable characters around the world (even more than Mickey Mouse)!
