Romantic Movies 2011 list
10. What’s Your Number?
Rising star Anna Faris stars in What’s Your Number as a woman who realizes that she will be a lonely old woman soon and rushes to find her true love out of the last 20 men she has dumped. Her search for true love opens up a lot of new experiences for her as she realizes life is not what she thought it was. The comedy is at times below par but Anna Faris has held her ground with superb acting and immaculate timing. Chris Evans (Captain America) brings life into the movie as the friendly neighbor who helps out our heroin to seek out her ex. What’s Your Number starts off the Top 10 Romantic Movies 2011 list at number 10.
9. The Art of Getting By
The Art of Getting By shows us the life of a kid for whom nothing holds importance. He does not know what to do with life and is pretty much a lonely guy. Then comes the ultimate warning; if he doesn’t start paying attention to his studies, he might very kiss his career goodbye. Enter a cute yet complex girl (Emma Roberts, who happens to be the niece of Julia Roberts) who is attracted to him and his strange ways. Thus starts a romantic tale of self discovery and overcoming the odds. The Art of Getting By was met with criticism regarding dialogues and acting but it fared well in the theaters.
8. Just Go With It
Just go with it is a typically Adam Sandler rom-com (romantic comedy) which is fully of his witty frolics and perfectly timed accidents! This time around, he is a doctor who lies to his girl friend that he is married when he is not. The only way out is to make his beautiful assistants pose like his soon to be ex wife so that his cover is not blown. What follows is totally hilarious and quite fun to watch as he has to lie again and again to cover up the original ones. Cricts bashed this movie for its lame jokes and unoriginality but those who enjoy romantic comedies will find enough in this movie to like it! Just Go with it comes in at number 8 in the Top 10 Romantic Movies 2011 list.
7. One Day
Lifted right off a bestselling novel of the same name, One Day is an in depth analysis of life and how it twists ambition and emotions of unexpecting but hopeful people. Two students on their graduation day decide to meet on the same date every year and tell the other how life has turned out for them. Dexter is a rich and spoilt guy with not a care in the world and Emma is a young ambitious girl wanting to make her mark in the world. The movie takes us through their meetings in the next 20 years. The movie One Day itself is very nice and the surprise at the end is almost a shock.
6. Friends with Benefits
Friends with Benefits shows what countless other movies have shown but yet it manages to inject some freshness into the dilemma. Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake might very well be the only reason this movie got a decent rating as their on screen chemistry is great. The main characters of the movie are long time friends and decide, despite all the rom-coms they have seen, to take their relationship to the next level. Confusion ensues as they deal with new emotions and situations. Friends with Benefits is an ok movie and holds the 6th place in the list of Top 10 Romantic Movies 2011.
5. Larry Crowne
Despite the fine performances from Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, Larry Crowne doesn’t quite hit the spot. The story follows a hot shot team leader who loses his job due to less education and tries to start a new life. With nothing to do and bills piling up, he goes back to college to only to fall for one of his teacher who too, ironically, is fed up of her life and wants out. Slowly but surely their lives begin to intertwine and finally Larry finds some happiness. Larry Crowne has been part written and directed by hanks himself and has not done too good at the box office.
Termed as a romantic chick flick, Bridesmaids show the possessive side of women’s relationships and how the tackling them can go horribly wrong! Annie (played by Kristen Wiig) is getting over her lost investments in her now closed bakery and finds out that her only childhood best friend is getting married. Her friend asks her to be the Maid of Honor which makes one of the Bridesmaids really jealous as they both battle to prove their relationship with Lillian (the childhood friend) is stronger than the others. Brilliant acting and immaculately timed scenes make this move very enjoyable to watch. Bridesmaids also was the last movie of Jill Clayburgh who passed away before the release of the movie. It is ranked 4th in the Top 10 Romantic Movies 2011 list.
3. Water for Elephants
The star of Water for Elephants, surprisingly, is not a hero but an elephant! A student of medicine loses his family and joins a travelling circus as a living. There he unexpectedly falls for the owner’s beautiful wife who is a star performer. The sparks fly in the strange environment of the circus and their mutual caring for the elephant drives them closer. Teenage heart throb Robert Pattinson plays the hero with excellent support from Reese Witherspoon as the lead lady. The story of Water for Elephants is shallow at some places but overall it’s a feel good romantic movie with a sense of righteousness.
2. Crazy, Stupid, Love.
This strangely named movie with unusual punctuations named Crazy, Stupid, Love shows us how tough it is being a simple person in this increasingly complex world. Our hero divorces his college love wife only to find out that he has nothing in him to attract another woman. That is, until he meets an ultra handsome, quick witted guy at the bar where he spends his only nights at and gets some training in the ways of the new world of relationships. Superb acting and flawless punch lines do make up for the minor faults of Crazy, Stupid, Love. and gives the audience an excellent time. A must watch for any movie lover.
